BBC Lifeline for International Medical Corps

Presented by Cathy Tyson, the BBC Lifeline film is a great opportunity to see some of our mental health programmes in action. Watch the film above (in two parts) or by clicking here.

The appeal was filmed in a refugee camp a few miles from the Ethiopian border, home to 17,000 people who’ve fled civil war in Somalia.

The families living here have travelled hundreds of miles, often on foot, to find sanctuary. For many, events of the past, and the violent deaths of loved ones, are inescapable. The sense of loss can be overwhelming.

International Medical Corps provides desperately needed help to refugees with mental disorders, and supports vulnerable mothers and children. It’s work few charities do. Often, in times of crisis, mental health needs are overlooked. And here, as in much of the developing world, they’ve been seriously neglected.

International Medical Corps see and treat a range of psychiatric problems - including schizophrenia, mania, bi-polar disorder, severe depression, post traumatic stress and paranoid psychosis – and some case studies can be seen in the film.

Also featured in the film is International Medical Corps' Early Childhood Development programme, working to improve mother and child interaction and thereby improve the child’s mental and physical development.
