Reaching sex workers and fishermen with HIV support in Kenya

Global battle against HIV/Aids

Decades of experience|Prevention|Treatment

35 million people are currently living with HIV/ AIDS worldwide, the vast majority in low and middle income countries, and in particular Sub-Saharan Africa. 3.2 million children are living with HIV, most of those were infected by their HIV-positive mothers during pregnancy, childbirth or breastfeeding.

In the global fight against HIV/AIDS, International Medical Corps has decades of experience helping people living with the virus and working to reduce the spread of HIV. Our efforts focus on training local people and developing the capacity of local health care workers to provide quality HIV/AIDS care and treatment. These services include confidential counselling and testing, antiretroviral therapy for adults and children, treatment of opportunistic infections, and prevention of mother-to-child transmission. We also specialise in delivering support to those with HIV/AIDS who are caught up in disasters or conflicts.

At every Primary Health Care centre supported or run by International Medical Corps we provide support and advice to prevent the spread of sexually transmitted infections including HIV/AIDS.

At the national and global level we work with governments, ministries of health, community based organisations and other health care providers to make sure that low income countries have policies in place and the expertise available to deal with the HIV/AIDS crises in their countries.

In Kenya, International Medical Corps provides HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention to some of the most vulnerable communities anywhere in the world - fishermen and sex workers around Lake Victoria. By targeting help to these groups that are most at risk of becoming infected with HIV, our work can have the greatest possible impact.
